Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Takes patients medical and ocular histories and records all patients’ examination information.
  • Performs the preliminary assessment and record of visual acuity, color vision testing, tonometry, autorefraction, lensometry, schirmer testing, visual field exams, IOL calculation, ocular motility, pupil assessment and refraction.
  • Properly instill eye drops and understand the indication/contraindication in use of dilation and ocular anesthetic needed for testing.
  • Performs automated visual testing and various types of eye photography to include Fluorescein Angiography, Pentacam, OCT, A/B- Scan.
  • Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients.
  • Serves as a mentor/instructor to ophthalmic staff in patient care and proper use of equipment.
  • Prepares exam room for procedures, organizes instruments and equipment as needed; sanitizes equipment, re-stocks medications and supplies (every month).
  • Provides ophthalmic surgical assistance in the clinic procedure room and operating room if needed.
  • Explaining diagnostic, treatment procedures to patients.
  • Operates, calibrates and maintains ophthalmic instruments and equipment as designated under direct supervision of ophthalmologist or optometrist.
  • Handles basic telephone triage.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.

JOB REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    High school diploma. Graduated from a (Committee on Accreditation for Ophthalmic Medical Personnel (CoA-OMP), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Ophthalmic Technicians program is preferred. Or completion of AAO Ophthalmic medical assistant independent study coarse.

    Experience:

    Must have at least two years experience at the Ophthalmic Technician level.

    Language:

    Good command of oral and written Arabic and English communication.

    Required Licenses:

    Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is preferred at the COA, COT or COMT level. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
